Grow your litigation skills as a criminal prosecutor!
Whether you’re a new attorney eager to step into the courtroom or a tenured attorney looking to enhance your existing litigation skills, this position offers hands-on trial experience and a direct connection to meaningful public service. The City and Borough of Juneau’s Law Department is seeking a motivated Assistant Attorney I or II to join our criminal section, where you’ll make a tangible impact and contribute directly to public safety in your community.
In this criminal law-focused role, you will:
- Collaborate with a fellow prosecutor and two paralegals on a steady flow of misdemeanor cases, including DUIs, larceny, and code enforcement;
- Gain significant courtroom exposure through all stages of prosecution from arraignment to trials and appeals;
- Work closely with law enforcement to provide guidance and build strong cases; and
- Develop or sharpen your trial skills in a high-volume, teamwork-oriented environment.
This is an exceptional opportunity to:
- Kickstart a litigation career straight out of law school;
- Transition into courtroom practice if you’ve spent most of your career outside litigation; or
- Enhance and diversify your legal skillset while serving your community.
WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR
Commitment to public service. High ethical standards. Collegial problem solver. If those phrases describe you, please consider applying. We seek a motivated attorney to join our prosecution team which consists of two prosecutors and two support staff.
Crucial skills for success in this position include self-motivation to learn CBJ law (i.e. CBJC Title 42, 72, and Chapter 1.40), Alaska law (i.e. A.S. Title 11, 12, and 47), and the Alaska Court Rules, as the incumbent will, upon a week of foundational observation and learning, be immersed in case work which includes arraignments, case screening, Rule 11 negotiations, and trials. As a fast-paced, nearly paperless office, the ideal incumbent must be computer savvy and quickly able to research relevant law and understand the relevant facts. Additionally, a qualified candidate will have the ability to formulate well-reasoned arguments, be comfortable making quick decisions, and prosecute misdemeanor cases and noncomplex civil cases independently with minimal supervision.
ABOUT THE LAW DEPARTMENT
The mission of the Law Department is to empower policymakers by drafting, explaining, and enforcing the law. We are a collegial team that adapts to the needs of our clients and coworkers. We have a criminal prosecution section with two prosecutors and two paralegals who prosecute around 1100 cases per year, and a civil section with three attorneys and one paralegal who provide a range of legal services including legal advice to clients, drafting legislation, litigating civil suits, and defending client decisions. Support staff are supervised by the office manager who assists with legislation and manages the department’s budget and other daily operations. The municipal attorney, who is appointed by the CBJ Assembly, supervises the attorneys and provides overall policy direction to the office.

The Law Department offices are located in downtown Juneau in the Sealaska Plaza Building directly across from City Hall.
A hybrid (i.e., 3 days in office/2 days working from home) arrangement may be available once eligibility criteria is met.
