Description
Yellowstone County is seeking qualified attorneys to join our team in prosecuting misdemeanor, felony, and youth court cases.
Deputy County Attorneys perform entry-level professional legal work designed to provide foundational experience in the practice of criminal law.
Senior Deputy County Attorneys are responsible for developing, preparing, and presenting cases before administrative, legislative, and judicial tribunals, as well as conducting associated legal and trial work. This employee must be able to handle a high caseload and work independently while adhering to departmental guidelines.
Appointment will be based on the candidate’s experience level. Advancement to the Senior Deputy pay band is expected within three years of employment, contingent upon performance and qualifications.

Deputy County Attorney Requirements
Graduation from a college or university of recognized standing with a Law Degree/Juris Doctorate;
Membership in the Montana State Bar or completion or passage of the Bar Exam within the six-month probationary period;
A valid driver’s license and the ability to pass a criminal background check as prescribed by CJIN/NCIC policies.
Senior Deputy County Attorney Requirements
Graduation from a college or university of recognized standing with a Law Degree/Juris Doctorate;
Membership in the Montana State Bar;
A minimum of two years’ criminal prosecution and trial experience as a Deputy County Attorney; or two years’ experience practicing law including civil litigation, criminal litigation and/or local government law; or any equivalent combination of experience and training totaling six years;
Demonstrated ability to litigate and try cases and effectively handle a demanding caseload;
A valid driver’s license and the ability to pass a criminal background check as prescribed by CJIN/NCIC policies.
