Formerly known as Washoe Legal Services, Northern Nevada Legal Aid (NNLA) is a private 501(c)(3) non-profit organization established in 1965. NNLA provides Northern Nevada’s vulnerable populations with access to justice, regardless of their ability to pay, to protect their rights, safety, and family stability. NNLA plays a vital role in serving domestic violence victims and their children; protecting the rights of abused and neglected children, the indigent, and the elderly; and increasing the safety and stability of immigrants who are elderly or victims of crime and domestic or sexual violence. Northern Nevada Legal Aid seeks full-time Staff Attorney for our Senior Law Center, Housing & Consumer Protection Unit. This position will provide counsel, advice, and direct legal representation to individuals 60 or older in Northern Nevada, focusing on housing and consumer-related issues. Staff Attorneys play a critical role in protecting seniors’ rights and ensuring stability and safety in housing and financial matters.
Some of the issues clients face include foreclosure, eviction, uninhabitable and unsanitary living conditions, wrongful lockouts, housing discrimination, termination of utilities or other essential services, consumer fraud, deceptive trade practices, fair debt collection practices, and elder abuse. The position may also involve assistance with advanced planning such as directives, wills, and powers of attorney, as well as other related legal matters impacting seniors in Northern Nevada.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Maintain direct representation and an active caseload in housing and consumer protection matters, as well as providing legal counsel, advice, and referrals to suitable resources. This includes drafting legal documents and maintaining your own calendaring.
Establish and maintain regular contact with senior clients throughout the duration of their legal actions, with a focus on trauma-informed representation.
Attend hearings, trials, settlement conferences, and other court functions fully prepared to actively advocate for clients.
Participate in outreach events for NNLA, collaborate with community partners, and serve as a resource to the community.
Provide legal services to NNLA clients in other program areas when needed and perform other tasks as assigned.
Collect, update, and review client and grant-reporting data on a monthly basis.
Complete other administrative tasks as assigned or necessary.
Qualifications:
Must be a member of the Nevada Bar, or possess an active Bar License in good standing from any U.S. jurisdiction to comply with Supreme Court Rule 49.1.
Bilingual English/Spanish strongly preferred but not required.
Experience with consumer and housing law issues, including NRS 118A and post-COVID eviction protections at state and federal levels, is recommended but not required.
Familiarity with Section 8 and Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) programs is recommended but not required.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to explain complex legal matters in a way that ensures client understanding.
Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds, including seniors and vulnerable populations.
Strong problem-solving skills, efficiency in decision-making, and the ability to refer clients to appropriate resources.
Strong organizational, technical/database, and detail-oriented skills.
Ability to take initiative and work independently, while also collaborating with a supportive team of professionals.
Salary and Benefits:
Salary Range: $69,160 – $72,800, depending on experience
13 paid holidays annually

Location:
Work will primarily be performed at NNLA’s Senior Legal Center located at 1155 E. 9th St. Occasional work may also be required at NNLA’s Main Office 401 Ryland Street Suite #100 Reno, NV 89502, Reno Justice Court (1 S. Sierra St.), and Northern Nevada HOPES (580 W. 5th St.). While most work is expected to be on-site, a hybrid/telework schedule may be considered depending on organizational needs.
